Now, more than ever, it’s important to understand your team’s preferred communication process. However, understanding coworkers’ various communication styles has never been easy to do. So, how can decision-makers ensure an efficient and communicative workplace environment for their employees? By getting better insight and understanding of your employee’s behavioral characteristics.
Research has shown that collaboration becomes much more efficient when you understand yourself and your coworkers. Empowering your team with better knowledge of their behavioral characteristics enables them to communicate better and reduce or prevent conflict.
Creating a smooth open-communication ecosystem within your company is the difference between losing top talent and attracting or retaining top talent. Employees are almost five times more likely to deliver their best work when they feel heard. However, ineffective communication greatly reduces productivity. 86% of employees and executives cite ineffective communication and collaboration as major causes of workplace failures.
Workplace communication has never been simple to tackle, especially when teams opt to stay remote. However, effective communication doesn’t have to be reserved for those working with their teams in person. As long as you have a team of people collaborating on projects, you’ll need to enhance workplace communication, analyze personality drivers, and deepen self-awareness through the DiSC assessment.
Get to Know DiSC
As you’re introduced to DiSC, you may wonder what’s being assessed. The DiSC assessment measures the dimensions of your personality. By answering a variety of questions about personal tendencies, preferences, and behaviors, the assessment categorizes you into one of the four personality quadrants- Dominance (D), Influence (I), Steadiness (S), and Conscientiousness (C). However, before you get too curious about the four groups, it’s crucial to get insight into yourself first. DiSC recognizes that constructive change begins with self-awareness and provides an in-depth profile explaining your personality type, motivations, stressors, and more.
Dominance
Classified as “The Winner,” D styles are motivated by winning, competition, and success. They tend to place a strong emphasis on shaping the environment and overcoming opposition to accomplish results. D-style people tend to be the decision-makers and leaders in the group.
When communicating with a D style, be brief, avoid generalizations, refrain from repeating yourself, and stick to solutions rather than problems. Essentially, get straight to the point when working alongside this person.
Influence
Known as “The Enthusiast,” I styles are motivated by social recognition, group activities, and relationships. I styles typically prioritize action, collaboration, and expressing enthusiasm, namely. These people tend to be the life of the party, excelling at social activities and entertainment.
Often described as warm, trusting, optimistic, and magnetic, I style people tend to emphasize shaping the environment by influencing or persuading others. When working alongside I style teammates, it’s helpful to consider their distaste for long meetings and routine.
Steadiness
Referred to as “The Peacemaker,” S styles prioritize giving support, collaborating, and maintaining stability. Motivated by teamwork, opportunities to help, and sincere appreciation, they tend to emphasize cooperating with others and are often described as calm, patient, predictable, deliberate, stable, and consistent.
The S style makes up 69% of the general population, making this group the largest group compared to the other group. However, when working with Peacemakers, it’s important to understand their dislike for change, sensitive nature, and preference for a good teamwork environment.
Conscientiousness
Known as “The Analyst,” C styles are often described as careful, analytical, systematic, diplomatic, accurate, and tactful. C styles emphasize working conscientiously within existing circumstances to ensure quality and accuracy. They’re motivated by opportunities to gain knowledge, show their expertise, and produce quality work.
When working with C-style people, it’s important to understand their preference for planning and orchestration. Because of their perfectionist mindset, Analysts tend to take their time when working on projects and dislike disorganization in the workplace.
