As teams continue to grow and evolve, it’s no surprise to see our colleagues transition into different chapters of their careers. In the case of our Senior Account Coordinator, Presley Price, the time has come to do just that! We’re so honored to have had the chance to work with Presley and to see her blossom into the talented professional she is today. Although it’s never easy to see one of our teammates leave Flourish, we’re always happy to see them grow! Before moving into the next phase of her career, Presley wanted to take a moment to share her lessons learned at Flourish.
How many people are lucky enough to say they scored their dream job right after college? For me, it happened before I even graduated. To say I was on cloud nine would be an understatement.
Not many people know the story of when I was hired at Flourish. I applied for a Marketing Coordinator position that listed 3-5 years of experience as a basic qualification. I didn’t meet all the qualifications but submitted my resume anyway. I mean, they said “badass public relations and marketing” on the website. It was a perfect fit.
When I interviewed with Megan Nivens-Tannett and Logan Cate, they instilled confidence in me from the first moment. I found myself joking and laughing along with them before the end of the interview. Emboldened by our conversation, I asked, “Are there any concerns you have about my ability to be successful in this role?”
Megan explained that I didn’t quite have the experience they were looking for, but she would write me a letter of recommendation for any other job I was pursuing. Although I didn’t get the job, I left the interview still beaming with the same confidence I felt moments before and knowing I now had two excellent references in my back pocket.
About 20 minutes later, Megan called me and offered me the job! She said they were going to restructure their plan and create a position for me. I was shocked, thrilled, and scared all at the same time. Of course, I accepted, and the rest is history!
My opinion and perspective were valued from day one. I was sitting in meetings with CEOs and top executives, and although sometimes my voice shook, I was encouraged to provide value to the conversation.
Words cannot explain how much I have learned during my time at Flourish. I strengthened my writing skills, embraced my passion for graphic design, and soaked up knowledge like a sponge. I also learned a variety of soft skills as well, like how to lead, how to communicate across all levels of leadership, how to set boundaries, and how to manage my time and projects effectively. I’ve listed a small handful of the lessons I learned at Flourish below.
Go for what you want.
If you’re willing to work hard to prove yourself, never be afraid to go after what you want. Although I didn’t have the experience listed in the job description, I was confident I could do the job at hand. I took the risk and applied anyway – and I got it! Be confident in yourself, and know the value you bring.
Everyone is an expert at something.
Working with executives and subject matter experts in aerospace, cybersecurity, and other complex industries can be intimidating. You may feel like their words go over your head. You may even feel that way about your own coworkers. The best thing about working in such a collaborative environment is that you get the opportunity to learn and to teach. Find something you’re passionate about and work to deepen your knowledge in the subject. If you have the drive, you can become your own subject matter expert. And trust me, marketing can seem like magic to engineers, too!
Don’t treat others how you want to be treated. Treat them how they want to be treated.
Working with a wide variety of personality types and backgrounds taught me that everyone has a different communication style. Some folks are driven by data and details, while others only want to hear about the big picture. You can’t always communicate with others the same way you want to be communicated with. (The DISC assessment changed my life.) Creating a solid relationship with your clients and coworkers and learning how they want to be communicated with and what drives them is the key to a successful partnership.
My time at Flourish has come to an end, but I’m leaving with unparalleled experience, skills, mentorship, confidence, and genuine friendship that I will value for a lifetime. *all the tears* My time with the company has propelled my career miles beyond what I expected at my age, and I cannot thank Megan enough for taking a chance on me and allowing me to prove myself worthy. Now as I start my next dream job, I will continue to root for this very special team and wish them all great success. I can’t wait to see what’s next!
Congratulations, Presley, on the next chapter of your career! You’ll always have a home with Flourish and we can’t wait to see what you accomplish in the future!
